Balamand is home to the historic Monastery of Balamand, to which she lent one of her spectacular hills. Founded in 1157 by Cistercian monks, by the 19th Century, the Balamand Monastery had become a center for learning with a license to launch educational programs, hence the University of Balamand which opened its doors in 1988.
