Kaftoun is derived from ancient Aramaic to mean “dug from” or “sculpted from”, but also possibly meaning “the domed”. Both roots allude to her being named after the domed Theotokos Monastery carved out of her red rock cliffs, amidst her olive and orange trees along the banks of the Jaouz River.
