Mathaf

An Arabic word for “museum”, Mathaf is a nickname given to this city slicker when the Beirut National Museum took up residence at her center. As the museum stood on the front lines during the civil war, concrete walls and cases were mounted to protect its national treasures, and 20 years later, these were torn down to reopen the museum doors in 1999.
