She takes her name from the Nahr Ibrahim, also known as Adonis River, which runs through her and into the Mediterranean Sea. Legend has it that Phoenician god Adonis was killed near the river, his blood flowing into it turning it red. In reality, this is due to the soil washed off the mountains by heavy winter rains every February, making it appear to be filled with blood.
