Legend has it that long ago, in 500 AD, two sailors in peril at sea prayed to the Virgin Mary for salvation. She appeared to them as a light source from a cliff and guided them safely to shore. To honor her, they carved a cave into that very cliff; the site of the present-day Our Lady of Nourieh monastery, built in the 17th century.
